The slush pile is the pile on an editor’s desk where unsolicited manuscripts sit. So in searching for material for his or her magazine, this editor reads all the submissions he or she asked for, and all those from people previously published in the magazine, and all those from big names or agents the editor trusts. And then to fill the rest of the magazine (all three blank pages) the editor turns to the six foot high stack of manuscripts known as the slush pile.
So the slush pile is not somewhere you want to be. Unless it’s slushpile.net. Slushpile.net is a really great literary blog, and a pretty good spot to get a book recommendation. It also has a great interview of Neil Strauss, the author of The Game and I KNOW some of you have read The Game because I made you read it. So check it out.
